The Art of Melani Kane Brewer

Artist Statement of Melani Kane Brewer

I have been a studio artist since 1994.  I have been working on my Earth~Air~Water series for about seventeen years.  The series incorporates my careers as a biology teacher, anthropologist, and artist.  I have been studying Nature all my life.  Beginning as a traditional quilter I realized it was much too restrictive.  I did a series of abstract works allowing me a new freedom with fabric.  I found it interesting, my art being so realistic, that it took the step of creating abstract work to transition to what I do now. I see the finished piece in my mind’s eye.  I know what it will look like before I even start.  My knowledge of anatomy allows me to create realistic plants and animals in my work.  I want you to see the bird fly off the nest or the moths take flight  I use painting, dyeing, quilting, thread painting, fabric manipulation, embellishment and hand stitching to capture each new creature.  As each creature is unique, so is each work of art. I am a “naturalist” in fiber.

Grey Breasted Toucan - is one of the pieces that will be on display.
